Luke 6:27-36

Luke 6:27–36 teaches that faithful followers of Jesus should expect opposition and even hatred in this world, but Christ calls his people to respond to their enemies in a radically different way. Instead of returning hatred with hatred, believers are commanded to love their enemies through concrete actions—doing good to those who hate them, blessing those who curse them, and praying for those who mistreat them. This kind of love goes beyond natural human instinct and reflects the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those who belong to Christ’s kingdom. Jesus grounds this command in the character of God himself, who shows kindness and mercy even to the ungrateful and the evil. Because God loved us when we were still his enemies, Christians are called to display that same undeserved mercy toward others.

  1. Love your enemies in deed, word, and heart. (27-31)
  2. Love your enemies as God has loved you. (32-36)
